Short Description
The subject English Studies is offered as one of two subjects within the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools.
Students on the Master’s degree programme acquire the specialist and teaching skills required to work successfully as a grammar school teacher.
Teaching methodology is of great importance to students aspiring to become school teachers. In addition to the customary theoretical education in teaching methodology, students complete five weeks of practical training at a school after attending a preparatory seminar. Seconded grammar school teachers help prepare students for their practical training. The subject of English Studies cooperates with post-secondary schools in the city and region of Hannover where students can undertake their practical training.

Students on the Master’s degree programme are taught about the English language, literature and culture in a practice-oriented, modern way. In teaching methodology, students learn about different teaching techniques. They take a compulsory course in “Planning and Analysis of English Lessons” to prepare them for their five weeks of practical training at a school. Students then have the know-how required to teach English in future.
In the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools, students who take English Studies as their first subject almost exclusively learn about English language teaching. In addition, students take a course in a subject discipline of their choice.
If English Studies is the second subject, students take advanced courses in the subject disciplines in addition to courses in teaching methodology.
All students who take English Studies as a subject in the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools spend a three-month study-relevant period abroad in a country where English is the official language. The English Department maintains contacts with British, American and international universities, and provides support to students seeking to go abroad.
