The main cafeteria at Callinstraße 23, which serves more than 6,000 guests a day, was built in 1981. The spacious square in front of the building connects the university and the northern part of the city. The green colour scheme of the building and a bridge at the side create a transition to the nearby Welfengarten.
There is a café as well as various facilities and shops for students in the entrance hall. On the upper floor, the main cafeteria has a dining area with a seating capacity of 1,440.
The building was needed because of the large increase in student numbers since the 1960s. The new building met several requirements: An underground car park for university staff was built to improve the parking situation in the Nordstadt while the cafeteria’s kitchen was extended to provide meals for other university cafeterias in Hannover. With this building, Studentenwerk Hannover created a central cafeteria for the university in the middle of the Nordstadt and Herrenhausen university locations.
