ERC Grants

The European Research Council (ERC) was established by the European Commission to fund basic, groundbreaking and visionary research using a bottom-up approach. It therefore allows researchers to identify new opportunities and directions in any field of research. Scientific excellence is the key criterium. The ERC is funded from 2021–2027 through the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon Europe".

The ERC Advanced Grant is intended for established, leading principal investigators who have a track-record of significant research achievements over the last 10 years. The ERC Consolidator Grant supports scientists with seven to 12 years of experience following completion of their PhD who want to consolidate their independence by establishing a research team or who have recently created an independent, excellent research team and want to strengthen it. The aim of the ERC Starting Grant is to support talented early-career scientists who are ready to start their own research group. The ERC Synergy Grant supports teams of two to four outstanding scientists working together and applying different skills and resources to tackle an ambitious research problem.
