Freedom and artificial intelligence

Artificial  intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a central part of our daily lives, not least through the introduction of virtual voice assistants like Alexa or innovative text-based chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude or Mistral. These technologies have the potential to enrich our lives by assisting us, thus opening up new kinds of freedom. However, while they can strengthen individual freedom on the one hand, there is also a risk that they may inadvertently restrict it. To ensure that AI continues to promote individual and societal freedom in the future, it is essential to increase transparency and provide everyone with access to this advanced technology.

A key concept supporting this approach is AutoML (automated machine learning). AutoML revolutionises the way we develop AI systems by automating the process of creating AI models. This means that even people without extensive technical expertise can create their own AI solutions. Prof. Dr. Marius Lindauer and his team at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence (LUH|AI) are exploring ways in which AutoML can contribute to the democratisation of AI development. Their goal is to create AI systems that are not only understandable and energy-efficient but are also increasingly available to experts from other disciplines.

Through the team’s work, the principles of democratisation in AI development are being brought to the forefront. AutoML can play a crucial role here by expanding access to AI technologies and simplifying their application. This enables individuals without AI expertise to train and customise their own AI models, significantly increasing participation in this revolutionary technology. AutoML thus helps bridge the gap between AI specialists and laypeople, fostering a deep understanding and active co-creation of the AI future.

Participating researcher

At the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Prof. Dr. Marius Lindauer and his team are working on questions regarding democratisation and social responsibility in the development of AI applications. His goals include understandable, energy-efficient and universally available AI systems at all levels.
