Kurzbeschreibung
The subject geography is offered as one of two subjects within the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme. Please note the subject combination options.
Geography involves the examination of spaces with reference to their human-environment relations and the analysis of the social, cultural, political, environmental and economic interactions in the context of sustainable development. At the beginning of the programme, therefore, emphasis is placed on the extensive study of the branches of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology; Cultural, Social and Human Geography; and Economic Geography.
The subject of Geography can be combined with a second subject in the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme (FüBa). After completing the Bachelor’s degree, students may go on to pursue a Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools or, if a non-school-based direction was chosen, a subject-specific Master’s degree programme. It is also possible to enter the job market with a Bachelor’s degree.

The programme starts with introductory foundation courses in all major branches of Geography: Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology; Cultural and Social Geography; and Economic Geography. In addition, students attend courses on Cartography, Statistics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in which they undertake practical work using software.
Students who take Geography as their first subject additionally take advanced compulsory elective courses in Physical Geography and Human Geography at the Bachelor’s stage. This also involves completing a one-week or two-week field trip and attending seminars on current issues. In the case of students who take Geography as their second subject, the stage involving compulsory elective courses is completed during the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools.
Courses on teaching geography provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to plan, design and reflect upon geography lessons independently and creatively. Non-school-based learning locations are considered, as well as innovative methods that stimulate learning and encourage meta-reflection and reflexivity.
As part of the interdisciplinary bachelor's degree programme, students with a focus on teaching have to complete a non-school-based internship as well as a school internship, both lasting four weeks. The non-school-based internship helps students to get first work insights in the area of teaching, to check on their career aspiration. For students with an non-school-based focus, an eight-week non-school-based internship must be completed.
