Kurzbeschreibung

The main aim of the Bachelor’s degree programme is to provide students with a scientifically oriented grounding. On the basis of foundation courses in experimental physics, theoretical physics and mathematics as required for the programme, students on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Physics gain an overview of the entire spectrum of physics. The diversity of physics at Leibniz Universität Hannover is reflected in the extensive range of advanced courses, enabling students to pursue modules in an area of specialisation at a later stage of the programme and, if desired, in a Master’s degree programme. To this end, students can choose from an extensive catalogue of courses to meet their interests and further skills requirements. The Bachelor’s degree programme enables graduates to enter a profession or to proceed to a subsequent Master’s degree programme.

Lehrinhalte

  • Atomic and molecular physics
  • Coherent optics
  • Electrodynamics
  • Quantum physics
  • Solid state physics
  • Theory of relativity
Studienverlauf

The first three semesters are dedicated to completion of the foundation stage. First of all, students deal with mathematical foundations and introductory courses in Experimental Physics and Theoretical Physics. In the subsequent semesters, this content is supplemented by topics such as the theory of relativity, atomic physics and quantum physics. Students then expand on the foundation stage in their chosen area of specialisation.

Students explore the material in groups and then complete problem sheets and tests on the lectures together. Most examinations are oral examinations in which content from several modules is examined. As a consequence, students need only take a few examinations, reducing the examination load.

From the third semester onwards, students take a so-called compulsory elective subject, worth 16 credit points, enabling them to gain an insight into the tasks and working practices of another subject. Standard subjects include Business Administration, Computer Science, Mathematics and Philosophy. However, other subjects are also possible, depending on the student’s individual timetable.

The Bachelor’s thesis, written at the end of the programme, should demonstrate that students are able to scientifically tackle a problem from the field of physics.

Empfohlene Fähigkeiten

The main reason for studying physics ought to be a love of the subject. After the first lecture, students soon realise that physics at university level is a different matter to school physics: the degree programme involves logical thinking and a precise method of working. Other necessary skills are the perseverance and patience required to complete weekly problem sheets. In addition, creativity and capacity for teamwork are also very useful.

Tätigkeitsfelder und Berufsmöglichkeiten

The aim of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Physics is to enable graduates to work in research or private sector companies.

Conceivable career options can be found in companies that offer in-house development programmes (e.g. special trainee programmes) for career entrants with a sound basic knowledge of physics. In addition, companies have a demand for employees who particularly possess analytical skills and the power of abstraction, e.g. in areas such as marketing and sales or project management.

Zugangsvoraussetzungen und Bewerbung

Zugangsvoraussetzungen

This degree programme is admission-free.
If you did not graduate from a German school nor have a German higher education entrance qualification (for example, the Abitur), a language certificate proving your knowledge of German is required for the application and enrollment.
