Dear colleagues,
The situation in Lower Saxony and the Hannover region is still serious; the level 2 alert continues to apply. Fortunately, the number of infections did not increase as rapidly as initially feared.
For this reason, scenario A applies as described in my last email. This means:
Teaching and learning at Leibniz University Hannover will be suspended for an extended lecture-free period from 18 December 2021 until 9 January 2022.
Since we have received numerous queries regarding the extended Christmas break, I would like to provide further details:
- Practical laboratory courses, practical work and examinations – thus any sessions where online formats would lead to a prolonged duration of study – will be held on campus.
- All members of teaching staff are free to offer alternative options for completing coursework instead of on-campus learning – such as term papers, presentations or exercises to be completed during the Christmas break – or to offer material for independent studies available online. Only mandatory attendance for lectures/courses is not possible, except for the reasons outlined above.
- A Christmas break does not equal time off. This means that teaching staff and staff supporting them continue to perform other official duties. Students should be asked to study independently, using formats other than on-campus learning.

Information on the further course of action will be provided on 6 January. We currently expect that we will be able to maintain on-campus learning until the end of the lecture period, i.e. until 29 January 2022.
I am delighted that we have succeed in maintaining on-campus learning at Leibniz University Hannover. This has been possible due to successful hygiene measures, a high percentage of vaccinated staff and students, responsible interactions and – last but not least – exceptional commitment on the part of teaching staff. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for this.
I also wish to thank the staff supporting members of teaching staff as well as all members of staff at our university. Every single one of you has shaped and developed Leibniz University Hannover over the course of this year – with your commitment, devotion and optimism. Often beyond the normal level, with outstanding personal commitment and sense of responsibility. This is not taken for granted, especially in these challenging times. I wish you and your families a merry and peaceful Christmas and some quiet and relaxing moments for all of us.
