Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) makes excellent progress in the latest Shanghai Ranking: In the subject category mechanical engineering, LUH improved significantly and achieved a global ranking of 151-200 (previous year: 301-400). In the national comparison, LUH was ranked 2nd (national ranking group: 2-4, with a calculated total score of 141.5 points, LUH is directly behind first-placed RWTH Aachen). In total, LUH was ranked in nine subject categories in this year's Shanghai Ranking, including 201-300th place or 9-15th place among German universities in agricultural sciences (including plant sciences and soil science at LUH) as well as in physics (physics, 201-300th place worldwide or 12-23th place in the national ranking).
The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy publishes the annual Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which assesses the research performance of universities in 55 subjects. The ranking is based on publication data, such as the number of publications in major scientific journals and the proportion of publications produced in international collaborations, as well as prestigious research awards. Prof. Dr. Peter Nyhuis, dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, is pleased with this outcome: "We value international collaboration and work with other research institutions and industry partners worldwide. I am delighted that the proportion of our international co-publications continues to increase and that this development is also reflected in the ranking".
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has around 3,500 students, about a third of whom come from abroad. With almost 40 million euros in external funding per year, it is the third most funded faculty at LUH. In addition to classic mechanical engineering, the range of courses also includes subjects such as sustainable engineering, optical technologies, biomedical engineering and energy technology. All of the faculty's institutes are located in close proximity to each other on Campus Maschinenbau in Garbsen, which facilitates academic cooperation, as well as cooperation with businesses and start-ups.
