The former “Bürgerschule”
Am Kleinen Felde 30
For many years, the building at Am Kleinen Felde 30, constructed in 1898 as a citizen's school, housed departments in the field of macromolecular chemistry as well as mechanical and civil engineering facilities of Leibniz University Hannover. Now a listed historical monument, it underwent major renovations between 2007 and 2011. First, the Institute of Food Science moved into spaces on the first and second floor.
After the renovations were completed in 2011, the Institute of Natural Science Education and “Niedersächsisches Studienkolleg” (a central academic facility of Leibniz University Hannover preparing international students for their studies in Lower Saxony) moved into the building.
Built in 1898, the former “Bürgerschule” was designed by the architect Otto Ruprecht in the historicist style combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. A particular challenge during the renovation phase was the work on the large roof. The use of special straight cut bricks allowed the best possible storm resistance to be combined with the preservation of the historic architecture. The natural stone elements of the façade were cleaned and repaired while all rooms, technology and outdoor facilities were renovated or replaced.
