Academic Writing

This course examines fundamentals of modern academic and research writing in English, from text organization and "red thread" patterns to sentence-level revisions for clarity and conciseness. It presents tools, strategies, and materials designed to help you, as an advanced writer of English, to produce a better final product: the polished, publishable draft. You will also discuss your own writing processes and current projects, and work with examples from authentic academic texts in order to troubleshoot your own writing.

The following topics will be covered:

  • effective writing processes to develop a well-structured and flowing text
  • typical written structures for various purposes, such as Introductions, and how to use them
  • sentence- and paragraph-level improvements for better flow, clarity, and conciseness
  • powerful independent tools for writing and revising with less stress
  • peer and instructor feedback on your current academic texts
  • other topics depending on the needs of the group
