The Leibniz Joint Lab Data Science and Open Knowledge of the Research and Development Department of the German National Library of Science (TIB) and the L3S Research Center under the direction of Dr. Javad Chamanara and Prof. Dr. Sören Auer welcomes applications for the following position starting at the earliest possible date: Scientific Assistant (PhD Position) in the field of message queuing in connected cars (salary scale 13 TV-L, 75 %)
The position is limited until May 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension.
Your role
We are excited to invite enthusiastic PhD students to join our dynamic research team. In this role, you will work on innovative projects exploring the selection, design, and application of domain-specific languages (DSLs) in messaging systems and complex event processing (CEP). Your research will have real-world applications, including testing in environments such as connected cars and high-throughput networks. This opportunity is ideal for individuals with a passion for research, strong technical skills, and a solid academic background.
What you will do:
- You will research, design, implement, test and deploy software solutions for message passing, processing and management. This includes working with declarative languages and their runtime systems.
- You will have the opportunity to publish your work in prestigious journals and conferences and to participate in seminars, workshops and academic meetings.
- You will work with faculty members, colleagues, and industry partners to advance comprehensive research initiatives.
- You will share your research progress and results in engaging written and oral presentations.
Who are we looking for?
- A master's degree in computer science or related fields such as mathematics or information science
- Experience with Python programming, including functional and object-oriented approaches
- Evidence of research experience, ideally demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed forums
- Familiarity with messaging systems such as Kafka, MQTT or RabbitMQ
- Familiarity with the development of domain-specific languages is an advantage
Other features that will help you succeed:
- Proficiency with common development tools such as IDEs, version control systems, and various task management and collaboration tools
- Commitment to test-driven development practices to create robust and reliable software
- A team-oriented attitude with the ability to succeed in interdisciplinary environments
- Excellent written and oral English skills (knowledge of German or the willingness to learn German is an advantage)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- A proactive, research-led approach with the flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team
