Short Description

The supplementary programme leading to a certificate enables students to take another complete teaching subject (formal qualification to teach a subject), without having to complete practical training or courses in education sciences. The third semester of the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools is the earliest stage at which students can apply for this programme. Students can also apply to take the course later (also after completing the preparatory phase of teacher training). Students are admitted to the subjects provided that places are available. In order to apply for English Studies, students must prove that they meet the language requirements specified in the Regulations concerning Knowledge of the English Language for the Subject of English Studies. Students wishing to Performing Arts must prove that they have passed the entrance examination specified in the Admission Regulations for Performing Arts in the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme. Course Content

  • Introductory phase (usually modules from the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme)
  • Specialisation phase (usually modules from the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools)
Course Structure

The course is generally divided into an introductory phase and a specialisation phase. The introductory phase corresponds to studies in the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme; the specialisation phase corresponds to studies in the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools. The supplementary programme leading to a certificate is worth at least 95 CP, and corresponds to full-time study lasting four semesters. Students are not required to write a final thesis, nor to complete practical training or courses in education sciences. At the end of the programme, students must provide evidence of language proficiency in individual subjects. The Examination Regulations of the Supplementary Programme leading to a Certificate contains further information about this. The course sequence for the subjects that students can take is also illustrated in the Examination Regulations. Students wishing to take English Studies must prove that they have spent a three-month study-relevant period abroad.

Recommended Abilities

Students wishing to take the supplementary programme leading to a certificate should have the skills required in the teaching profession: enjoyment of imparting knowledge to children and adolescents, taking their different needs into account. In addition, much of the work in schools is characterised by exchange with parents, education specialists and other teaching staff. For this reason, communication and teaching skills, an interest in the chosen subjects and good time management are important factors in this profession.

Career Opportunities

The supplementary programme leading to a certificate for teaching at grammar schools enables graduates to meet the requirement for receiving a formal qualification to teach the completed subject (formal qualification to teach a subject) from the recruiting educational authorities. Students must clarify with the competent department of the state school authorities whether the completed subject may be an examination subject in the preparatory phase of teacher training.
