Stay abroad possible, but not obligatory.
The research oriented international master program North American Studies invites advanced students to develop a research profile in North American culture, literature, and media. The program situates itself in the tradition of interdisciplinary American Studies, combining literary, cultural, historical and social studies.
The program of North American Studies approaches the cultures of North America with a close focus on their political and social contexts and in historical differenciation. Possible topics of classes: Colonial Power Relations, Nineteenth Century Gender Ideologies, Cultures of Slavery, Periodical Culture Studies, Film Remakes, Superhero Comics, TV Studies, Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter, Asian American Studies, Studies of Indigeneity, Decolonial Theory, Queer Theory, Transnational Book Markets and much more.
The study program is complemented by project courses (independent studies), dedicated, e.g., to organizing a conference, creating a blog, or curating an exhibition. A stay abroad or internship is part of the program. The stay abroad can take the form of a research trip or participation in a summer school, for example.
• A clear interest in literary and cultural questions in the English-speaking world
• A love of literature and grappling with theoretical academic texts and their abstract contents
• Sound knowledge of the English language, minimum C1 CEFR (see Special Language Regulations)
With a Master’s degree, graduates are trained to take on key roles in cultural organisations and politics. Potential fields of employment include the media, journalism, publishing, public relations in international businesses, museums and cultural institutions, politics or higher education.
