Short Description

Attention: this programme was renamed for the winter semester 2022/23 (previously: "Molecular and Applied Plant Science").

The bachelor’s degree programme in Plant Biotechnology (B.Sc.) offers intensified training in molecular and applied plant science. Students learn both molecular biological/biochemical content and, to a lesser extent, application-related aspects, e.g. with regard to plant breeding, plant nutrition and plant cultivation. In addition, students gain a broad basic education in science: chemistry, physics, mathematics, biostatistics and biology. In the fifth and sixth semesters, students have the opportunity to specialise as they see fit by choosing compulsory elective modules.

The aim of the degree programme is to provide students with a basic education in science and biology, focusing on molecular biology and biochemistry. Besides providing students with a broad scientific foundation, the programme is also a good starting point for differentiated life science research in university or non-university areas.

The degree programme is the only one of its kind in Lower Saxony. Due to its plant-focused profile, the programme differs from a conventional bachelor’s degree programme in biology. This profile is oriented towards molecular biology/biochemistry or plant biotech with a strong emphasis on practical application. This is used to develop and apply biotechnological and genetic engineering methods, as well as methods for technological impact assessment and the classification of the biological safety of plants. While the bachelor’s programme in biology therefore essentially covers the entire breadth of the life sciences, the bachelor’s programme in plant biotechnology focuses on the plant sciences, forging a link between basic and applied plant sciences.
