Short Description
Besides acquiring educational, psychological and methodological foundations, students on the Master’s programme in Educational Sciences learn specific skills for planning, developing, analysing, accompanying and evaluating teaching and learning processes in areas of education outside of school.
The programme focuses on the broad and interdisciplinary development of skills and creation of profiles for the different areas and tasks involved in education outside of school. These areas include public and private (continuing) educational establishments, various organisations, foundations, associations, trade unions and companies (especially large concerns and SMEs), and both university and non-university research departments.
The Master’s curriculum consists of courses from the disciplines of vocational education, adult education / continuing education, education science and psychology. The thematic areas of education science are described, analysed and reflected discursively from different disciplinary perspectives. As such, both the practical approaches and the academic orientations on the Master’s programme are of an interdisciplinary nature.

Course Content
- The degree programme is divided into a compulsory area, which includes study content from all four disciplines involved in the degree programme, and an elective area, which consists of a specialization and an area of flexibility. There are four tracks to choose from, each assigned to one of the four disciplines:
- Vocational and industrial education
- Educational Research
- Adult education
- Culture and media in educational processes
The programme is divided into a core area for the first two semesters and a required options area in the 3rd and 4th semesters. In the core area, students take seven modules from the disciplines involved. In the required options area, students select one of the following four areas of specialization: vocational and industrial education, adult/continuing education, culture and media education and educational case understanding. The areas of specialization each consist of three or four modules plus the master’s thesis module.

Applicants should display an interest in academic studies of changes in the field of educational studies, as well as in empirical research methods.
The Master’s programme prepares students for working in specific fields such as education management/controlling, programme and course development, organisational and staff development, (education) consulting, and academic educational research.
Admission Requirements
An undergraduate degree in a related field of study, such as
- Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science)
- Special Needs Education (Bachelor of Arts)
For master's degree programmes with restricted admission, places shall be allocated according to the university’s own selection procedure, if there are more applicants fulfilling the admission requirements than there are places available. The exact admission requirements can be found in the admission regulations:

First-year students from Germany and the EU
- June 1st – July 15th of the year for the winter semester
First-year students from non-EU countries (VPD from uni-assist is required)
- April 15th – May 31st of the year for the winter semester
Students resuming their studies and transfer students from Germany and the EU (application in a higher semester)
- June 1st – July 15th of the year for the winter semester
- December 1st – January 15th of the year for the summer semester
Students resuming their studies and transfer students from non-EU countries (application in a higher semester)
- April 15th – May 31st of the year for the winter semester
- October 15th – November 30th of the previous year for the summer semester
