Short Description
The switch to a sustainable energy system is the central challenge for our future and for the world climate. The regenerative generation of electrical energy, its storage, transmission and distribution plays a key role - as does efficient use - especially in the field of e-mobility. The need for excellent, interdisciplinary trained engineers is growing accordingly.
Course Content
- Electrical power engineering
- Thermal/mechanical power engineering
- Efficient energy conversion and energy use
- Transformation of industrial processes
- Renewable energy systems
The power engineering degree programme is an interdisciplinary bachelor's programme with equal parts in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Students receive a broad, scientifically sound education that is combined with practical aspects.
The four-semester basic course of study primarily covers mathematical, scientific and technical subjects and deals with the sustainability aspects of energy engineering from the very beginning. An important part of this is the eight-week basic internship, which should be completed before the start of the course.
In the first semester, students already gain an insight into the broad spectrum of energy technology. The basic studies are rounded off by practical project work, constructive projects and energy technology basic skills. In the fifth and sixth semesters, students choose their specialisations and complete their studies with a bachelor's thesis.
The power engineering degree programme, which is unique in Germany, is characterised by its diversity between conventional and renewable energy production, thereby creating a broad understanding of energy-related issues that can be explored in greater depth in a consecutive master's programme.

Students of Power Engineering should possess strong powers of imagination and abstraction. It is also important that they have a technical flair, an interest in mathematics, and a logical, pragmatic and realistic way of thinking. Good foreign language skills are very important for entering the job market. Solid English language skills are therefore advantageous.
The programme involves eight weeks of basic internship, which prospective students are strongly recommended to complete before embarking on the degree programme. No specific time is set aside for completing this basic practical training during the degree programme. Detailed information on the basic internship can be obtained from the Internship Office.
Professional fields of activity for graduates in Power Engineering range from component manufacturers such as turbine and generator construction, power station and industrial plant construction, energy suppliers and grid operators to large industrial-scale users of electrical energy and planning offices.
In addition, the Bachelor’s degree qualifies graduates to embark on a postgraduate Master’s degree programme.
- Power Engineering (Master of Science)
- Energy Technology (Master of Science, Double Degree)
- Geodesy and Geoinformatics - Navigation and Field Robotics Track (Master of Science)
- Mechatronics and Robotics (Master of Science)
- Optical Technologies (Master of Science)
- Water and Environment (distance learning) (Master of Science)
- Master’s Teacher Training Course for Technical Education for Single-subject Bachelor's Graduates (LBS-Sprint) (Master of Education)
- AI-driven Mechatronics and Robotics (Master of Science)
Under certain conditions, admission to the following Master's programmes is also possible. More detailed information can be found in the respective admission regulations. If you have any questions, please contact the course advice of the desired Master's programme:
Admission Requirements
This degree programme is admission-free.
If you did not graduate from a German school nor have a German higher education entrance qualification (for example, the Abitur), a language certificate proving your knowledge of German is required for the application and enrollment.
