A change of programme is when you want to change degree programmes (e.g. from a BSc in Architecture to a BA in Political Science). A change of subject is when you want to change one of your subjects on the same two-subject Bachelor’s degree programme.
How can I change programmes or subjects?
To change programmes or subjects, you must reapply, taking into account the usual application periods. If the new degree programme is admission-free, it will be easy to undertake the change. In the case of restricted admission degree programmes, you will take part in the selection procedure alongside all other applicants. Unfortunately, it is not possible to simply undertake a change in registration based on your existing enrolment. Please use the online application portal for your reapplication.
Your change in registration can only be undertaken once you have been allocated a place on the new degree programme within the selection procedure. Until this point, you will remain enrolled on the degree programme that you initially chose, and will reregister as usual. If the change cannot take place and you no longer want to continue studying, you may terminate your registration up to one month after lectures begin.

-
Which deadlines must I meet?
The regular application deadlines apply. For Bachelor applications:
- 15 July for restricted-entry degree programmes
- 30 September for degree programmes with open admissions (summer semester intakes are only possible in the case of enrolment on the BSc in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Engineering)
For Master's applications, the deadline may differ depending on the programme or applicant group (applicants from EU and non-EU countries). You can find out which deadline applies to you here: Application deadlines for Master's programmes
-
Must I terminate my registration to apply for a change of programme or subject?
No, you may apply for a new degree programme even if you are enrolled at a higher education institution.
-
Which credits will be transferred in the case of a change of programme or subject?
If you wish to have credits transferred from a previous course, please contact the faculty directly.
The course advisors are usually responsible for recognition in two-subject Bachelor’s degree programmes.
If you require the transfer of credits from single-subject Bachelor’s degree programmes or Master’s degree programmes, please contact the responsible Examination Committee (you can find the right contact persons at Exam information & course advice).
Credits can only be transferred if they are assessed as being equivalent to the performances to be achieved on the new degree programme.
If, on the basis of transferred credits, you are placed in a higher semester, you may apply directly for entry to the higher semester as a transfer student. This case is often called "lateral entry".

What else do I need to think about?
A change of course or subject may have an impact on BAFöG receipts, particularly if the change occurs after the second semester. For this reason, please make sure that you contact the Loans & Grants Advisory Department of the Studentenwerk (Student Services Organisation) before you decide to change course or subject.
Please also make sure that you are aware of the rules regarding long-term tuition fees in Lower Saxony.
If you require one-on-one advice, please contact the Student Advice Office in person.
In addition, an event called Zweifel am Studium ("Doubts about studying") is held each semester to help those who are unsure about whether to continue studying to make up their minds.
