Studying without Abitur

If you are interested in studying at Leibniz Universität but do not have the Abitur (the German university entrance qualification), you should find out about alternative paths to studying: in Lower Saxony there are many other ways of embarking on a university degree. The rules are laid out in the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (in German only) Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz (NHG) (§18 NHG):

  • Fachhochschulreife (certificate of aptitude for specific and short-course higher education) also entitles you to study at a university if your chosen course builds on the specialisation of your Fachhochschulreife.
  • Regular vocational further education with at least 400 units of instruction (Meister/in (Master Craftsman); Techniker/in (Technician); Betriebswirt/in (Business Economist), etc.) is an entrance qualification for all subjects.
  • Completed vocational training of three years minimum and at least three years of work experience in your profession enable you to register for subject-specific courses.
  • If you can provide evidence of five years of professional activity or at least two years of vocational training and two subsequent years of relevant professional activity, you can also be admitted to a subject-specific university entrance exam (Immaturenprüfung, Z-Prüfung).
