The German Research Foundation (DFG) has established 17 new research training groups. One of these is led by Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) in cooperation with Humboldt University Berlin (HU Berlin, co-lead) and examines the interplay between geometry and numbers. The spokespeople for the research training group “From geometry to numbers: Moduli, Hodge theory, rational points” are Prof. Dr. Stefan Schreieder (Institute of Algebraic Geometry, LUH) and Prof. Dr. Gavril Farkas (Institute of Mathematics, HU Berlin). The new research training group will receive 6.7 million euros in funding.
The interplay of geometry and numbers is an important phenomenon in mathematics. It is based on, among other things, the fact that algebraic invariants can be assigned to geometric objects. These are values that remain constant in the case of smaller changes to the object. Structural changes to the object, on the other hand, result in a different value for the invariant. The research training group “From geometry to numbers: Moduli, Hodge theory and rational points” focuses on this phenomenon by investigating the interplay of various theories regarding both aspects. The goal is to calculate individual numerical invariants and study their qualities in order to identify general interconnections.
Research training groups provide doctoral candidates with the opportunity to obtain their doctorate within a structured research and qualification programme at an advanced academic level. Four research training groups, including the new group, are currently being led by LUH. Alongside the Institute of Algebraic Geometry, the Institute of Algebra, Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics is also participating in the new research training group.
