The hall of residence
Dorotheenstraße 5-7
The hall of residence at Dorotheenstraße 5-7 was built in the mid-1960s and accommodates up to 500 students. The land was provided free of charge by the city of Hannover. Three high-rises were built, with two groups of students living in eight rooms on each floor. There are also a number of individual apartments available. The buildings were thoroughly renovated in the 1990s.
In the middle of the complex is the “Karmarsch-Haus”, which houses central facilities and is the site of the famous “Silo parties”. The construction of the community centre was funded by Hannoversche Hochschulgemeinschaft, today’s Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft Hannover e.V.
Following a significant increase in student numbers in the 1960s, the construction of the spacious hall of residence became a necessity. However, halls of residence have existed in Hannover since the early 20th century. The first 15 rooms were located in the current Wilhelm Busch Museum, between 1921 and 1935. Today, Studentenwerk Hannover provides around 2,300 places in 15 halls of residence. The hall of residence at Dorotheenstraße accommodates the majority of students.
