Health Insurance

In many countries, students are required to have health insurance, which is why it is important to obtain information from the regional coordinators of the International Office and your own health insurance company before going abroad.

  • Information Health Insurance

For stays abroad in EU countries: Membership of a German compulsory or substitute health insurance fund, which also covers the costs in the destination country, is normally sufficient. This is guaranteed by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which can be found on the back of the German insurance card. With the EHIC, students are entitled to necessary medical treatment under the same conditions as nationals of the destination country.

Outside the EU: For stays abroad outside the EU, it is advisable to take out international health insurance that includes medical repatriation and repatriation in the event of death. The DAAD offers comprehensive health insurance cover for this purpose, which is accepted by most partner universities.

Subletting accommodation during the stay abroad

The International Office can help you to find a subtenant for your private room, hall of residence or apartment for the duration of your stay abroad.

This involves subletting to international students from partner universities. Depending on when the subletting starts, a placement is almost guaranteed and, as far as possible, requests can be taken into account when looking for a suitable person.

Language preparation

In general, proof of the language of instruction in the host country is required both for admission to host universities and for applications for scholarships. Which language test is required as proof for the stay varies from university to university. Information on this can usually be found on the websites of the universities or can be requested from the regional coordinators.

Cultural preparation

Cultural preparation for a semester abroad is essential in order to better adapt to the new environment. LUH offers valuable opportunities for this: International events promote intercultural exchange; the Study Buddy Program helps to network with international students, improve language skills and better understand cultural differences - an ideal preparation for living and studying abroad.
