The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for the following position of salary scale W2 of the Lower Saxony salary system (NBesO) with tenure track leading to salary scale W3 NBesO to be appointed at the earliest possible date: University Professorship (m/f/d) in Modern and Contemporary History

The position is limited to 5 years. Following a positive evaluation, the candidate will receive a tenured professorship (salary scale W3 NBesO).

The Position

The advertised professorship deals with the central questions of the emergence of the modern world up to the present day. It primarily covers the period of the 20th century, but also includes the 19th century as well as the first two decades of the 21st century. German and European history is to be viewed from a global perspective, so that the history of violence and dictatorship in the 20th century is put in a global context.

In research and teaching, the professorship substantially covers the history of the 19th century from the beginning of European high industrialisation to the 20th century. The most recent contemporary history (history of the 21st century) should at least be represented in teaching. In addition to epoch-related specialised research, the professorship should also regularly cover topics of public history/historical culture in its classes, which are offered in all degree programmes taught in the Department of History.

The professorship is part of the institute-wide research and teaching focus "Connecting Europe to the Atlantic World". Relevant experience in the acquisition of third-party funded projects is advantageous.

The professorship is integrated into the historical-cultural networks of the city and the region (archives, museums and memorials). Continued involvement in this field is desired.

Your Profile

  • Research specialisation in at least two different fields of 19th and 20th century history
  • Interweaving regional and global perspectives in at least one systematic field of historical studies (e.g. migration, cultural or economic history) is desirable
  • Spatial focus on German and European history in a global world
  • High-ranking publications in international peer-reviewed journals are desirable
  • Success in and experience with the acquisition of competitive third-party funding and collaborative projects is an advantage
  • Ability to teach courses in English
