If individual study places are still available shortly before the start of the semester, they will be allocated in a lottery process.

Period of lottery

For the summer semester 2025, the lottery will take place from

24th March 2025 - 2nd April 2025

Since the application portal will be online exclusively in this period, the link will not be available until 24.03. on this page.

Information on the lottery

  • What is a lottery?

Should places of study become free again after the completion of the succession procedures, such places will be allocated by drawing lots.

  • How do I participate in the lottery?

Please use the online application portal. The link to the online application is only activated during the lottery period and will be deactivated after expiration.

  • Did I have to apply regularly to the Leibniz University Hannover to participate in the lottery?

No, all prospective students can participate in the lottery even if no application has been submitted beforehand. In order to participate in the lottery, a corresponding university entrance qualification is required.

  • How and when will I find out if I have been selected?

Only the lot decides on admission and rejection in the lottery procedure. As soon as the lottery procedure has been completed (around mid-October for the winter semester or mid-April for the summer semester), you can check the result as quickly as possible via the online application portal.

If your application is drawn, your notification of admission will be made available to you as an electronic notification in the online application portal (exception: admissions for two-subject programmes are not available online and will only be sent by post).

If your application is not drawn, you will not receive a rejection notice, but only an information note in the online portal (also applies to two-subject programmes).

In addition, every application that is drawn receives a binding notification of admission by post. Notices of rejection will not be sent.

  • For which degree programmes can I apply by lottery?

You can apply for any programme that takes part in the lottery. You can also apply by lottery for several degree programmes - however, only one application per programme is permitted.

  • When does the lottery take place?

Generally, the lottery takes place two weeks before lectures begin. For the winter semester, this means probably the end of September / beginning of October, the summer semester probably at the end of March / beginning of April.

We will announce the exact date at this site as soon as possible.

  • How does the lottery procedure differ in the summer and winter semesters?

For the winter semesterBachelor's and Master's programmes take part in the lottery.

For the summer semesteronly Master’s programmes, which also accept applications for the summer semester, take part in the lottery.

  • What happens after I have been selected?

You must accept your study place in due time via the online application portal (please refer to your notification of admission for the deadline and the exact procedure). The admissions office will register you immediately and send you your LeibnizCard (student ID) and the access data for the IT services by post.

Since the lottery procedure only takes place after the official start of the semester, when the introductory events and the distribution of courses and internships may have already taken place, we recommend that you contact your course advice for further information.
